Ionic Air Purifier - Scientific Peer Reviews, Where Are They?

July 4th, 2009

It seems the in thing to criticise the ionic air purifier industry. “No scientific peer review exists” has been a frequent criticism posted on influenza, air quality and indoor pollution blogs.

Mr. John Moore, a trained researcher at Cornell University, New York, may yet surprise these supporters of the peer review system.

He says:

• “a lust for profit has led to too many journals,…all too easy to find…poor-quality work”

• “not everything in the peer-reviewed literature is correct. Indeed, some of it is downright bad science”

• “the peer review system…it’s the least-bad system that can be devised”.

Members of the public, warns Mr. Moore, must not regard every scientific peer review as the “gold standard” as “even reviewed literature can be cherry-picked to support any argument.” It is instructive that “professional scientists…know that scientific truth evolves on the basis of a mounting consensus, not through an isolated paper that adopts a maverick position, even if it has been peer-reviewed.”

These nuggets of wisdom from an “insider” like Mr. Moore is of great value to all industries, including the ionic air purifier industry, that seem to be wasting funds chasing up the wrong road.

Critics of the ionic air purifier demand the gold standard, nothing less. So do the governing bodies. How do we know? We simply asked. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) responded thus:

“NIOSH is not aware of any peer-reviewed scientific studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of ion generators/ionic air purifiers against viruses. NIOSH does not have any studies planned to evaluate these devices nor do we have a policy on their use.”

But it was encouraging that the NIOSH has not pronounced final judgment as they also said:

“NIOSH provides support for investigator initiated research. Should someone want to conduct such studies they may apply for funding by mechanisms available and described under “Funding Opportunities” at: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/oep/. Proposals are funded annually based on availability of funds, relevance of the proposed work to the NIOSH mission, and the quality of the science proposed.”

At our Ezine article (accessible via The Ionic Air Purifier Blog Ezine widget), we have reproduced the NIOSH’s exacting parameters of a scientific peer review.

It is not for lack of funding. Neither is it outright rejection by the authorities. Why aren’t there any scientific peer reviews of the ionic air purifier after all these years? We would sure love to hear from someone in the ionic air purifier industry.

In our view, with the advancements in ionic air purifier technologies, manufacturers see the advantages of tapping on the prestige of official funding. It may take just one successful scientific peer review to grab the lead? The ideal state would be Mr. Moore’s “mounting consensus” of peer reviews in authenticating the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of the ionic air purifier.

Ionic Air Purifier – Until Scientific Reviews Abound, Do We Just Give Up On It?

Meanwhile, users looking for the ideal ionic air purifier can look to our Ionic Air Purifier Review – 4 Key Factors Model.

It is encouraging that we now know that a scientific peer review to be acceptable to any authority, it must cover the 2 safety aspects in our 4 Key Factors Model.

NIOSH states very clearly: “…a scientifically valid study would need to be designed to test whether ion generators are effective in killing viruses to the extent that a hazard no longer remains, and that such technology does not by itself generate new hazards of its own, e.g., ozone or oxidized by-products. The design of such a study would be challenging.”

The crowd of the city is splendid and they have rationalized themselves in all spectrums of life. Ideologically, they are in the top gear, these days. They have moderated and reorganized themselves to the burgeoning scientific growth. The things that they complete manually are now being done with the handful of automated tools. When the things or goods are completed with the aid of such scientifically sound tools, definitely the finished goods will also be good. The quality and quantity together go high in turn. Besides this, it definitely in turn is an indication of enlarged growth. Moreover in addition, more number of proficient people are engaged to run the mechanized apparatus. The employment speed has increased because of it. This applaudable growth’s impact can be seen in every nook and corner of the city. You can define it as chain system which starts from constructing or designing things and finally buying to selling the same and then its overall impact on the economy and expansion of the system. As the growth is visible all over, in the same way lets explain it more with the help of an example. I am talking about Powder Springs Roofers(Need one?click here!); they are the supreme examples on this. Their approach towards work with most superior tools brings a great mix. Their work has greatly helped the poor or the middle class people of the city, who do not have much currency and are not able to give much of the time. After all, the economical price and in timework is some thing every body wants. In same way Lake Elsinore Plumbers are undoubtedly following the same confederation. They have bought accolades for them. The water system setup in a mechanized way has been their strong point. You would be surprised with their super swift speeds. Let me gather and put to you some views about Takoma Park Electricians (Need one? click here!). The utmost sophisticated lighting solutions have been made doable because of them. They have created definitely a firm place for themselves.

Ways to pass a smog test

July 3rd, 2009

In our time we live in, the car is practically a life necessity next to food and shelter.  And with our current economy, most people are keeping their cars longer.

Well when this happens and your car gets older, there are some things about your car’s maintenance you are going to have to become aware of.  I have learned them from owning a San Diego Smog Check shop

One of those things is when your car needs a smog check. Until your car hits seven years old, most people don’t even think about it.

But beware, if you fail the smog test, what could of been a simple $50 smog test could suddenly become a $300-$400 repair.

When you need your vehicle to pass a smog test so you can renew your vehicle registration, here are some tips you can take so your inexpensive smog test, can pass with flying colors.

So before you visit a smog test San Diego only center follow these tips.

First, make every effort to ensure your vehicle is running right. When you see that your vehicle is not running smoothly, go take it to a auto repair store and have them take a look to find out what is wrong. Then have it fixed before your smog test.

Second is an easy tip but you will find it is necessary and that is to take your car for a drive.Remeber when you are trying to pass the smog check, you vehicle’s burning of the fuel needs to be efficient and produce as little smog as possible.  Well when your car is not properly warmed up, it may not have proper combustion.  If that happens, you stand a chance of failing.Just drive it for a few miles, 10-15, and you will have it running as optimally as possible when you bring it in.

Third, try to use fuel additives.  You do this whenever you fill your car up with gas.You just put it into the gas tank. What’s going to happen is this gets the emmission levels lower because it cleans the intake of your car and exhaust paths. This makes it possible for the fuel and air to freely flow.

Fourth, have your tires inflated to the proper pressure. This little known tip helps your car drive more smoothly and more accurately during the smog check. The overall emmissions improves in output because the engine is able to maintain a steady load.

Finally, have your oil changed. If the oil in your car does need to be changed and is contaminated, this can be a cause of failure when you take it for a smog test. Contaminated oils are high in hydrocarbons and that could cause the failed test.

Follow our guidlelines and tips and you are going to have a good chance of passing the smog check with flying colors.  Take it from my experience running a San Diego auto repair service shop.

Your Home Security And Privacy

July 3rd, 2009

Due to the increase in door-to-door salesman, criminals looking to scope out your residence, and other annoyances, you may sometimes feel that answering your door isn't worth it.  When you do finally answer your door and find a door-to-door salesman, you may have a very tough time getting rid of them. They will continue to hassle you and keep coming back until you support their group or buy one of their innovative products.

To prevent this from happening and keep unwanted company from bothering you, you should use a protective barrier between your door and the street. You don't really need a 15 foot high electric fence, as even the most basic of fencing will do the trick.  You can install a simple decorative fence around your yard, complete with locking gate, to keep any type of solicitors at bay.

Although a fence is a great way to achieve privacy, not everyone has a yard that they can build a fence on.  You can also use a gate that blocks entry to your porch or front door, as this way you can keep the gate locked at all times.  The main idea and theory here is to make it difficult to approach the door to your home.  This way, salesman, solicitors, and even snoops will see that it requires a lot of effort to reach you - and they will normally just give up and move on.

Even though a fence or locked gate are great, you can't overlook a dog either.  A barking dog can be very effective, as trespassers simply can?t look over a dog that is barking.Barking dogs aren't the same as a fence or gate, although they are very common these days.  Keep in mind however, that the effectiveness of a dog with scaring off unwanted guests will greatly depend on the disposition and character of the dog you have.

Nearly every dog will bark when it sees a stranger, although not every dog will prevent someone from coming to your door unless it has been trained to do so.A lot of door-to-door salesman and snoops deal with dogs on a daily basis, and will normally just ignore the dog and the barking and proceed to come to your door.  If the dog is more of a violent nature and appears ready to strike, then it will be a different store.  If the salesman or snoop notices the dog is ready to bite, he will normally stop in his tracks and turn around - out of the fear of getting bit.

Keep in mind that having a dog doesn't mean that you have to blood train him or put him on steroids to keep unwanted visitors away.  What you need, is an aggressive dog that will stand his ground and help you keep your privacy.  When a solicitor visits your home and sees your aggressive dog, he won’t want to sacrifice a sale at the risk of getting bit by your dog.

As annoying as door-to-door solicitors are, there are ways that you can improve your home security and your privacy around your home.  You can also invest in home surveillance systems as well, to further enhance your privacy and security.  For solicitors, fencing with a locked gate is the best way to go, if you have the room for it.  On the other hand, if you don’t have the space for a fence, you can always use a dog or other options. Privacy and home security is very important - which is why you don’t want solicitors invading your space.

Home Improvement Painting Tips

July 3rd, 2009

After 30 years of painting houses, I’ve learned that most people simply hate to paint.  But it is a well known fact that painting a home is a small investment which brings large rewards.  Most people think about painting only as a last resort but this is the worse area of your home to ignore if you are planning to place it on the market for sale.

There are several books on this subject and countless TV programs which endorse the idea of painting a house before trying to sell, but this is still often ignored.  Most rationalize that the new home owners will want to chose their own colors anyway after they move in.   This can be a very costly mistake since in reality most home shoppers are looking for the home that is in “move-in” condition and doesn’t require any work.  Lets face it, today with so many homes for sale, the smart seller wants the shopper to remember their home and to feel comfortable on that first visit.  If not, there probably will not be a second visit or an offer to purchase.

There are some simple home improvement painting tips that can help the seller with his painting job.  One of the most time consuming tasks associated with painting a house is ‘cutting in’.  If you can master this job, you’ll no longer hate painting.  Many people think painting is an easy job and they don’t appreciate the challenges of of doing professional style work.  For example, walls and ceilings are almost never the same color, so the painter must paint to the very top of the wall without smearing paint onto the ceiling.  This is what is known as ‘cutting in’ and is easily the most critical part of any paint job.

Most professional painters recognize the benefit of using masking tape on the surface you want to protect.  You’ll find the standard blue colored painter’s tape in just about any home improvement store.  The tape is made to be easily removed and it will speed up any paint job.  The mistake that many new painters make is when using painter’s tape, they feel they can speed through any job and still get professional results.  Again, another wrong assumption on their parts.  An experienced painter will still hold the paint brush at the proper angle and ‘cut in’ by using just the tip of the brush for a professional looking job.  This is the best technique to use along baseboards as well as around windows.  With some practice you might be able to ‘cut-in’ rather then tape all areas.  When you reach this level of skill you’ll find yourself flying through your paint jobs.

No matter the time one has to spend, painting your home before placing it on the market just makes good sense.

The Advancement Of Solar Panel Design

July 2nd, 2009

As technology continues to improve prices for solar panels and related hardware become more reasonable. Solar panels cost substantially less today than they did only a few years ago and offer tremendously better output per panel. Solar panels available these days are so much more efficient that you can use 1/3 less panels to create the same amount energy as previously needed.

The improvements in solar panel technology extend to other areas of the panels as well. The lastest solar panels are more durable and can take extreme weather much better than previous panels. This means they will last longer and perform at their peak for most of their useful life.

Previous generations of solar panels would become less efficient over time and would generate less energy as a result. This would mean that if their life expectancy was 15-20 years, then in the last 5 years the panels were functioning at 50-75% of their full capacity. The key issue with them was that they were very resistant to the weather and because of that they would become less productive over time.

Not only do the lastest panels last much longer than previous models, but they also keep their energy generating properties later into their lives.Another improvement to solar panels is their ability to generate electricity from sunlight that strikes them at a steeper angle. This is really important since very few homes will be perfectly positioned to catch the suns rays directly on the panel. The latest panels can still generate most of their energy capacity when used at sharp angles. This can help homes that have very nearly perfect sunlight exposure. This improvement is incorporated into most of the newer units and has not raised the solar panels cost at all.

One is the ways that modern solar panels have improved is in the way they convert the DC current from the panels to the AC current the home runs on. In older systems all the panels were connected to a junction box that ran to the inverter. This single inverter has the responsibility of converting this collection of solar panels output into the correct AC current for the home.

This was an inefficient way of doing things because of the length of electric cable required to hook to panels on the roof to the inverter which was on the ground. The newest models of solar panels come with an internal inverter, which is referred to as a microinverter.

This means each of the panels individually converts its DC output directly to AC within the panel and delivers this to the home directly.

The Benefits Of Solar Panels

July 2nd, 2009

Installing solar panels for home use can be a great way to minimize or even eliminate your electric bill. Solar panel technolgy is ever expanding and each new model is made more durable and efficient than the previous one.

One factor that makes solar power systems such a worthwhile alternative is that the technolgy has improved significantly and you will now need less panels to produce the same amount of energy. This means your costs for the project are lower as well as not needing as much roof space.

There has been advancements in the technology of the control and connection equipment as well. The latest systems provide a very sophisticated controller that will allow you to use the power that you generate during the day, and then switch to your local utility for power during the evening. Inverters can also funnel any extra energy you produce directly to your local utility, which will earn you credit. You can now live off of the power grid during the day and also sell your extra power if your system is large enough to produce an excess.

When the sun goes down the inverter will switch you back to your power utility. Many communities will put a limit on the amount of power you will be able to produce, and you will not be allowed to generate more electricity than you use. That is why you might not want to size your system any bigger than is required to cover your needs.

For you to get the most out of your solar power system you need to have a place to mount the panels for maximum sun exposure. If you have a roof that is slightly off, some of the solar panels for home use allow you to angle their mounting to compensate. Some of the recent solar panels on the market have the ablitly to generate electricity even if the sunlight hits it at a steep angle, which also allows for much more flexibility in your mounting of the panels.

One thing to consider before installing a solar power system is that there might be low interest loans or grants available to you through local or federal renewable energy programs that can help you fund the project.Make sure you investigate if your local utility offer any of these programs, and check to see if you qualify.

To help save the environment and also save some money on your electricity costs, you might consider installing a solar power system.

How To Make Your Home Solar Powered

July 2nd, 2009

If you are looking for a way to lower your energy bills each month, a solar power home kit might be the answer. If you want to reduce the amount of money you pay on your electric bills then recent advances in solar panel design has made this technology an effective method to do so. By utilizing a solar power system you can replace up to all of of your electricity by using the sun, and you don’t have to pay for power any more.

Solar systems are simple to set up and are offered in a wide variety of different configurations. Most of the job can be done by the homeowner and an electrician only needs to hook up the cables to their home’s power supply. If you want to pass the inspection you will have to hire a electrician because of specific codes that have to be closely followed.

The first thing you should do before buying a solar power kit is to determine your homes power requirements. You can do this by reviewing your power bills. You need to look for your highest power usage and also figure out your average usage for the year.

This will allow you to decide on which sized system is right for you. Also, most of the modern solar power home systems enable you to install a basic setup with a few panels and then add more each year as your budget permits. This can be handy since you can spread the cost out over several years instead of having to finance it all the first year.

The two important parts of a solar system is the solar panel and the power inverter. A rail system will hold the solar panels secure, and keep them a few inches up off the surface of the roof. You do this to make sure rain and debris doesn’t get stuck in the panels and that they are fully ventilated. To ensure that they are secure as possible you should anchor the rails to the roof joists. The panels will need to be supported properly because even though modern panels are lighter than previous models, they still can be quite heavy.

After the solar panels are assembled and in place you can run the cables down to the spot where the inverter will be located. The inverter will switch the currency from DC, which the solar panels produce, to AC, which is the format that all homes run with. Both exterior and interior models of inverters are offered.

If you went with an exterior inverter you only have to run the cables to where the inverter will sit. If you are going to use an interior inverter you may need to have an electrician route the cables because certain electrical codes must be followed. Once you have laid out and mounted the power cables they need to be connected to the electrical system of your home.

You might have to find an electrican to do it for you, and it would be helpful if they knew about installing solar power systems. Once this is complete, you are ready to enjoy years of lower electrical bills as your solar power home kit converts sunlight into savings.

What You Need To Know When Installing A Wind Power System

July 2nd, 2009

When looking for a way to generate electricity for their home most people think of solar power. While this is a good solution, home wind turbines are also a very reasonable alternative for most homeowners. Home wind turbines are quieter, efficient and more reliable than ever and will do a great job of generating power for your home.

Generating your own power with a wind power system will give you many advantages. Unlike solar power that needs the sun to be shining in order to generate electricity, home wind turbines can operate day and night as long as the wind is blowing.

When choosing a turbine system you will have to consider the elevation and size of your lot. The single biggest factor for good electrical production from these home wind turbines is access to a consistent wind for as much of the day as possible. You might have to install the unit on a higher tower to get access to the required wind, or locate it in an area of your lot that is not blocked by the trees.

When selecting a home wind turbine you really have a choice between two different styles. There is the traditional horizontal style turbine and the newer vertical wind turbine.

The horizontal home wind turbine uses a rotor assembly with a number of blades that spin when the wind blows. This rotor assembly is connected to a generator by a shaft assembly and this generator is what generates the electricity when it spins.

There are a few drawbacks to this design and you need to know about these before making a decision. Firstly, the turbine blades are larger, which means it takes a stronger wind to get them to turn. Despite being able to generate electricity with a slower wind, a smaller turbine would not be able to produce as much energy as a larger turbine.

The next issue is that the horizontal models have to face the wind and the wind’s direction is always changing. The turbine will not generate electricity until the wind turns it into proper orientation.

The turbines that are vertical are designed differently than the horizontal kind. They don’t use blades to get to shaft to spin, and they sit on the shaft vertically. They use a modified cup or scoop mounted to the shaft to rotate.

This is an advantage since it is less obvious than the larger blades of a standard horizontal home wind turbine. As well, because the shaft that rotates is vertical, the heavy generator can be installed close to the ground.

Another major advantage is that since the shaft is vertical, this type of turbine can catch the breeze no matter what direction it is blowing and never needs to adjust its position. It will also rotate with a gentle breeze which will help you achieve better efficiency when compared to a horizontal turbine.

The drawback of a vertical turbine is that they don’t generate as much power as the horizontal turbines do. This is help slightly by the fact that these turbines can still generate energy in winds that are too weak to turn a horizontal turbine, but overall they still don’t gererate as much power.

You can see that both designs offer advantages and whichever one you choose, it can really help you lower your electricity bill by providing quite a bit of power. You will find the one that best suits your requirements if you spend some time comparing both models.
